Nigel, Jonas, Poboktan Loop
Skyline Trail:
This is the highest trail in Jasper. Twenty five of its
45 kilometers (28 miles) are above treeline with marvelous
wildflower meadows and a 360 degree panorama of mountains
above “the Notch.” The altitude gain is a
wonderfully reasonable 820 meters (2700 feet), however
this trip is best done later in the season (August to
October) to avoid remaining snow. Plan for 3 to 4 days
for this alpine adventure in the Maligne Range of the
Canadian Rockies. Because this trail begins at world famous
Maligne Lake and ends at the Signal Mountain Fire Road,
a small extra fee applies for a shuttle bus trip. This
is the most popular trip in Jasper so please contact us
early to make reservations.

Nigel, Jonas, Poboktan
Loop: We start this excellent 5 day
trek in Banff National Park and climb Nigel Pass to the
Jasper border, where we have views of the high and rugged
peaks of the Columbia Icefields’s eastern flank.
On our second day we travel along the Brazeau River and
make camp at Brazeau Lake. Our third day is spent in Poboktan
Pass which was named by geologist A.P. Coleman in 1892
after the Stoney name for the owls seen by the exploration
party. The pass continues to be one of the best places
in Jasper to see the wary Mountain Cariboo, cousin of
the European Reindeer. Our longest day is 19 kilometers
(12 miles) over Jonas Pass but the reward is that 13 kilometers
(8 miles) of this traverse is above timberline. You get
outstanding views of glaciated peaks, and the chance to
spot marmots and pikas as they cavort along the rockslides.
Our last day returns us down Nigel Pass to our Van and
the scenic drive back to Jasper on the world-renowned
Icefields Parkway.

Tonquin Valley:
“A unique combination of lake, precipice and ice
…. presents itself with a singular beauty almost
unequalled in alpine regions of North America”,
wrote mountaineer and historian Dr. J. Monroe Thorington
of the Tonquin Valley. We start our 6 day trip with a
short shuttle bus trip from the Portal Creek trailhead
to the Cavell Lake trailhead. We follow the Astoria River
valley for our first day and by our second day we arrive
at the full splendor of the ten peaks of the Ramparts
towering over Amethyst Lakes. We take light packs on day
3 to explore the spectacular alpine regions of Chrome
Lake and the Eremite Valley with possible scrambling for
strong parties who reach Arrowhead Lake. We skirt the
Amethyst Lakes in the towering shadow of the Ramparts
on day 4 and set camp along the MacCarib Creek. There
is also the chance to explore Moat Lake along the Continental
Divide, which is the border between the provinces of British
Columbia and Alberta. On our last two days we take a scenic
meander along MacCarib Creek, over MacCarib Pass and down
Portal Creek to our waiting Van near the Marmot Basin
Ski hill. A small extra fee applies for the shuttle bus
trip. The trip can be completed in 4 to 5 days if your
party prefers.
